July is here — and that means we're halfway through the year. It's the perfect time to pause, reflect, and ask yourself an honest question: are you on track with your financial goals?
A mid-year financial check-in is one of the most powerful habits you can build. It takes less than an hour and can completely redirect the second half of your year. Here's exactly how to do it.
Step 1: Revisit Your Financial Goals
Pull out the financial goals you set at the start of the year. If you didn't set any — no judgment. Set them now. The second half of the year is still full of opportunity.
Ask yourself:
- Which goals have I achieved or made progress on?
- Which goals have I neglected?
- Which goals are no longer relevant?
- What new goals should I add?
Step 2: Review Your Income
Compare your actual income for the first half of the year against what you expected or hoped for.
- Has your income grown, stayed the same, or declined?
- Are your income streams diversified or dependent on one source?
- What can you do in the next 6 months to increase your income?
If you're a business owner, review your revenue, profit margins, and cash flow position honestly.
Step 3: Review Your Spending
Look at your bank statements for the past 6 months. Categorise your spending and ask:
- Where is most of my money going?
- Are there subscriptions or expenses I've forgotten about?
- Am I spending in alignment with my values and goals?
Most people find at least one or two areas where money is leaking unnecessarily.
Step 4: Check Your Debt Progress
If eliminating debt was one of your goals, measure your progress:
- How much debt have you paid off in the first 6 months?
- Are you on track to meet your debt elimination target by year end?
- Do you need to adjust your repayment strategy?
Step 5: Review Your Savings and Investments
Check your emergency fund, Tax-Free Savings Account, retirement annuity, and any other investments:
- Are you contributing consistently?
- Have your investments grown as expected?
- Can you increase your contribution for the second half of the year?
Even a small increase in your monthly contribution now makes a meaningful difference by December.
Step 6: Celebrate Your Wins
This step is non-negotiable. Acknowledge every financial win from the first half of the year — no matter how small. Paid off a store account? Win. Started a savings account? Win. Read a financial book? Win.
Celebrating progress keeps you motivated to continue.
Step 7: Set Your Second Half Priorities
Based on your review, choose your top 3 financial priorities for July to December:
- The one debt you will eliminate completely
- The savings or investment goal you will hit
- The income stream you will start or grow
Write them down. Put them somewhere visible. Review them monthly.
